Opening Article in the Mecklenburg County 2008 State of the Environment Report

The Mecklenburg County Environmental Policy Coordinating Council (EPCC) was established in 2003 by the Board of County Commissioners to compile and prioritize important and strategic environmental issues which the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the six Towns face.  In particular, the EPCC is looking at the “big picture” in an effort to identify overlaps, gaps and conflicts that occur between the various advisory boards and councils.

The EPCC is reviewing air quality, water quality and land use issues.  The EPCC recognizes that significant improvements have occurred in many areas since 1987.  Nevertheless, the demands of our vibrant community continue to evolve as growth and commerce intensify.  Focus by our leadership, staff and community on the themes articulated within this Report is essential to promoting Charlotte’s continued health and livability over the next 20 years.

The success of our community is due in no small part to the attentiveness and proactive nature of the members of our community.  This State of the Environment Report reflects this attentiveness and provides a tool for our pursuit of a bright future.
